The visa is not subject to Italy’s annual work-visa quotas (Decreto Flussi) and does not require employer sponsorship or a Nulla Osta, making it faster to obtain than most other Italian work visas. To qualify, applicants generally need at least six months of relevant experience, a role considered “highly qualified” (typically requiring a university degree or specialized professional qualification), and an annual income of at least €28,000 from remote work.
Required documents typically include proof of the remote work arrangement (employment contract or freelance engagement), evidence of income, private health insurance valid in Italy and proof of accommodation.
The Digital Nomad/Remote Worker visa was introduced for the first time in 2024, established by the Inter-Ministerial Decree of 29 February 2024. The visa and its Permesso di Soggiorno are intended for non-EU individuals able to work remotely. The new visa is divided into two categories: Digital Nomads, for individuals who are self-employed, such as freelancers and consultants, and Remote Workers, employed individuals who are authorized by their company to work remotely from abroad.
